How did Sylvia’s Closet start?

June 2023

TransPonder received a $25,000 grant through RHEC (Regional Health Equity Coalition) funding to buy gender-affirming products to distribute for free through our Queer Resource Center.

We researched and purchased the products most commonly requested by our community members.

We shopped at Janet’s ClosetNew York Toy CollectiveShapeshiftersTomboy XTrans EssentialsTranstheticsTrans Tool Shed, and Tuck Buddies.

July 2023

The grand opening of our ‘Resource Room’ was held on July 29th, 2023 at our Arthur St. location in Eugene, during our quarterly Queer Community Day!

Here’s what Sylvia’s Closet looked like at the very beginning of July.

August 2023

TransPonder’s Executive Director, Kyle Rodriguez-Hudson, announced that the ‘Resource Room’ had been given a new name.

In the hopes of it serving as a ‘sister closet’ to Marsha’s Closet in NYC, Rodriguez-Hudson and the current Executive Director of STARR, Mariah Lopez, renamed it Sylvia’s Closet after Sylvia Rivera who co-founded STARR with Marsha P. Johnson in 1970.

September 2023 – now

In just a few months, we’ve given out more than 700 gender-affirming products for free to Oregon’s trans and gender-diverse community, and now we’re running pretty low on stock.

So, we’re using this year’s #GivingTuesday to focus our efforts on restocking Sylvia’s Closet. We’re aiming to raise $2,000 to be able to continue filling the access gap for trans and gender-diverse Oregonians, providing every gender-affirming product we can think of in every size and shade we can find.

“Organizing Sylvia’s Closet was my first big project when I got hired!..I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a restock in the near future, it’s been such a great resource to offer the community!” – Jack Flukinger (he/him), TransPonder Office Manager
