Transgender Day of Remembrance 2021

navy background with ivory text

Dear Community Members,

In honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance 2021, we are requesting that our Lane County community come together to write bios and haikus to honor the trans people who have passed this past year. These will be recorded and featured during the Transgender Day of Remembrance candle ceremony presented by TransPonder at Unitarian Universalist Church.

If you are interested in participating in this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance, we wanted to offer several ways to engage in this process:

Writing Space

You would contribute to as many trancestors as you felt comfortable writing about with:

  1. A short 3-4 sentence affirmative bio of a trancestor individual/individuals. This can be what they liked, their favorite activities, how friends described them, or affirming words to describe them.
  2. A Haiku* which is 5-7-5 syllables describing them. This is taking the bio in many ways and offering a simplified yet sincere way of honoring an individual.

*This writing project was offered and is led by someone on the Transponder team that is of Japanese ancestry and finds Haiku’s simple and supportive for conveying care.

Reading of the Bios

You can show up virtually to support the reading of the bios or in person at the Oregon EMU. We are holding this recording space November 14th beginning at 3:30 PM on Sunday, location will be at the University of Oregon EMU, room number to be determined and on a zoom link–email tara@transponder.community for that link.

Please sign up for any of these activities by emailing tara@transponder.community.

Thank you in participating as we gather as a community to honor and reflect on the lives of the transcestors we’ve lost this year. As we process and grieve as a community we recognize that participating may be difficult.
